Looking back on the GodView series, here’s what we learned:
SESSION ONE
“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” -A.W. Tozer
Read Matthew 16 - We covered the story of Jesus asking the disciples what folks were saying about him. The disciples gave him a few answers, but then Jesus asked a more important question: “Who do you say that I am?”
So, who is God to you? Is your view of him small, limiting, inaccurate? Is he distant, or is he growing closer and getting bigger in your view?
SESSION TWO
How you view God determines both your expectations and your responses.
Read Matthew 11:2-6 - John the Baptist probably knew Jesus growing up. He personally baptized Jesus. In fact, two accounts say that around the time John was pulling Jesus up out of the water, a voice came from heaven saying “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”
So John should have known Jesus was the Christ, the Messiah, the one God sent to rescue everyone. But when he hit a tough spot in his life and was put in prison for speaking the truth, he had to ask Jesus if he really was who he thought he was.
We will all have times when our vision of God is checked or wrecked. And some people walk away from God afterward. But are they really walking away from God- or just a poor presentation of God? If we view we have a view of God that limits him only to making us happy or keeping us safe, we will be rocked when we get hurt. We must follow a God who is way bigger than our expectations.
SESSION THREE
We will all come to points when a small God is not enough. Then we need the true, big God.
God is both a caregiver and a rule-giver. These are true about parts of his character. But let’s remember that these are only aspects.
If we only think of God in the role of caregiver, we will be disappointed when we need something other than caregiving from him. People walk away from God when they think they know everything there is to know about him. Think about it- have you ever known every single thing about someone? If you’re really honest, do you even know all the deep mysteries of your own personality? God is so much bigger, deeper, so much more without limits than our earthly relationships. How could we possibly allow ourselves to think we know everything about God?
Read Exodus. Yes, all of it. You can do it.
Moses got to experience God in so many ways. He didn’t start building assumptions about who God was but rather met with him constantly. He was always open to whatever God had going on. And he had an amazing life.
