Nice Christians

Jake made an interesting observation while he and a bunch of student leaders were giving away free hot dogs and inviting people to Oak Leaf Church. He said that the people you would expect to be nice often aren’t.
People who didn’t go to church gladly took the invite and took a look. Those who went to church sometimes said “I already go to church.” This statement was often accompanied with a scowl or a head-shake. You would have thought these people were sprayed with skunk perfume.
You would think that a Christian would say something like, “I already go to church, but you guys are doing a great thing.” Or maybe, “thanks for giving away hot dogs.” Or maybe just a smile. But too many times, those who should be experiencing the joy of the Lord looked like they needed a shot of Pepto.

I kinda used to be that guy that said, “I already go to church.” Which wasn’t true. What was true was that I had grown up in church, wasn’t a regular attender now, and I was too busy to dedicate time with a bunch of fake people.
I would say that many of the “bitter” people are “de-churched” or they are “ultra-churched” or they’re a militant atheist.
That’s not me anymore and now that I’m on the other side of the service and invite, I make sure to put on a happy face for the servant of the church that’s inviting and serving me. My reply now is “We already go, but thanks for the _____. It’s awesome yall are doing this!”
perfect response, in my opinion.
