When Everyone is Doing It

A year ago, we surveyed our people and about 18% of those that took the survey said they came to Oak Leaf Church because they saw a road sign.  We were the only ones putting out about 200 road signs on the weekends.

We have some great road signs designed and ready to be ordered, but I’m going to put it in a drawer.  See, there are hundreds of political signs out all day long, and two other churches are also putting out signs.  What was effective early on, is now crowded.

Besides, our people are our best signs. And a personal invitation is the best postcard.  SuperNatural kicks off as we move back to the movie theater on July 20…you should invite everyone you see.

Isn’t it neat that the political candidates can leave signs out for so long? Who really stands out during this time of year?

Churches fall under a different rulesthough, don’t they? Churches can put signs out on Friday afternoon and have to pull them up on Sunday afternoon, right?

OLC may have been “the only ones” putting out signs a year ago, but God has graciously brought a couple of new, great churches to the area the past couple of years that use temporary road signs as well. As I think you say, it’s the kaleidoscope of political signs that are tough to stand out with.

At what point in church growth do temporary road signs go away? Does NewSpring or North Point still put out road signs?

Maybe we should just get some people together, put them in t-shirts, and let them take turns standing where the signs would have been. i’d be willing to bet that people would notice the dude standing on the corner instead of the political sign…or the other church signs. OK I’m only kidding-we don’t need anyone dying from heat exhaustion…can you imagine the rumors from that?

Is it “other churches” that OLC is competing with? Nah, it’s the devil.

Church signs for anything other than directional information aren’t as effective as vocal invitations. Many people see them as litter and I’m willing to bet that it wasn’t just a street sign that brought someone to OLC.

prayer + word-of-mouth + looking-for-a-church-home + oh-yeah-an-OLC-sign-lets-try-there = 1st time guest.
